The car starts without problems, i apply the brake, then push in on the release button on the gear shifter but it wont push in so i cant get out of park. It is a 1999 escort se.

The internal workings of that handle are to the best of my knowledge plastic. It would probably be best to pull the shifter knob and see if maybe it's just too worn and won't depress the plunger. Also, if it's an aftermarket shifter handle it might not allow the pin to disengage the locking gears on the lower end of the shifter handle. Good luck!

I'd like to hear back from Ivehadit about this one.
Perhaps there's been a satisfactory fix. If not, at least take the handle apart. Alaskan Thumper's probably right, the thing's worn out. Next step go to the dealer. Talk to the guy behind the parts counter. He'd probably love to show you how much he knows and how tight he is with the mechanics. I've had a few who pull a mechanic over and have them explain how to fix something right there and then in detail. Shows the customer that the guy behind the counter has some weight in the company. I'd go there, find out if these parts wear out every other week. If so, maybe they're cheap. If not, find out how much a wrecker wants. |
