my ford escort wagon keeps stalling while i'm driving. All the lights stay on (have power), and it will start up again after it stalls. It's got gas and all the spark plugs are good. Anyone have any suggestions? thanks

Hi...the car stalls when I'm driving...even at highway speed. The engin just stalls and I still have power - lights and everything on the dash still work fine. The lines are clean, the air filter is new and I put some of that ethanol (?) dehydrating fluid in the gas tank in case there was some moisture in the lines.
Any ideas? Danielle |

So, you are driving along at highway speed and it stalls and you have to use the key to restart it? Or does it catch again and continue on its own?
Sounds like this must be an intermittent problem or you would have gone to a mechanic before now. If that's the case, you might want to try changing the fuel filter. It's fairly inexpensive to buy but I found my 98 a pain to change. I actually took out the battery and the battery support plate so I had enough room to remove the fuel filter hose clamps. On the 98 it's a metal cylinder a bit smaller than a pop can on the firewall directly behind the engine. 'm not sure how it looks on the 89. Rather than getting into looking at other possibilities that are much more expensive to swap it would probably be time to have a mechanic speicalizing in Escorts have a look if the fuel filter change doesn't help. |

Thanks, I'll check the fuel filter.
The car is actually stalling when it's idling too. It doesn't catch again....well, it did once or twice. Then usually I have to wait a few minutes and start it up with the key. It's pretty similar stall when driving or when it's parked. Danielle |
