I was driving along when suddenly my 1997 Ford Contour just died. I cruised to a halt, put it in park, turned everything off, and tried starting it up again. The engine makes a terrible grinding noise but the engine does not turn over and start. The brake peddle feels a little stiff. I have just had the transmission replaced (about 4 months ago and have done about 1000 miles since then) and had the oxygen sensors replaced about 3 months ago. I am trying to decide where to take it (mechanical or electrical). Does anyone have any advice as to the possible problem? I thought maybe starter motor or alternator? But why would that cause the car to die while moving? I tried hooking my code reader up to check the computer, but got no error codes.
