I have a 98 windstar that will not shift out of park. I have tried the turn the van off and turn the key one click forward and shift into neutral and then start the van. This worked the first time but now it will not start when in neutral. The van starts fine in park. I changed the brake light switch on the brake pedal only to find out that the old switch was fine. I get power on both sides of the switch one is constant and the other side gets power when I press the brake pedal. I am now looking at the main body harness that is located on the driver side under the carpet near where your left foot would be while sitting. I took home a volt meter from work to try and trace the wire from the second side of the brake switch. just by moving the harness around the dome lights when out. Now the van will shift out of park but the dome lights are now not working and the service engine light is on. I am going to take home my buddys computer and OBD2 sensor and see if any codes are stored in the computer. any suggestions would be welcomed.
