I was hoping someone here would be able to help me with this problem I have been having with my 2002 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0 litre. It has 90,000 km on her.

Yesterday I was driving and everything was fine, when out of the blue my engine started running very ruff at a stop sign. Then I noticed ton's of black smoke spewing out of the exaust! I immediately drove to my fathers house that was only a couple blocks away. I called him out and he sayed to shut it down. We both looked under the hood to see if we could visually see any problems. Nothing looked out of the ordinary. I started the engine again after a couple minutes of it being turned off and to our supprise everything was fine. It ran perfect! What the hell happened?

I figured that it was a fluke and that the computer just had to be reset, and forgot about the strange occurance. I believe now it might have been due to the computer not allowing enough air to the air/fuel mixture because the smoke was black not blue, although this is just an uneducated hypothesis.

It was fine for a few days until today. I was coming home from the doctors office when the car just shut down on me unexpectedly. I was travelling about 50 km an hour when I noticed the steering stiffen and a lack of power. I looked at the RPM and came to the conclusion that it had stalled. I pulled over to the side and started it again, and it fired up like nothing was wrong. Now it runs perfect again.

If anyone has any information about what could be causing this it would be greatly appreciated. I would just bring it in to the Ford dealer to diagnose it but they told me on the phone if it wasn't happening at the time of the check-up that the odd's were slim that they would be able to locate the cause of the problem.

Help! I love my SUV and hope this isn't the start of a lemon in progress.

Thanks much!
