2000 expidition. It has rained for 5 days in CT and my battery has died. After charging it I have had a host of problems. A few are my idiot lights keep blinking my radio and clock goes on and off by themselves, and the best of all, when I came home yesterday i was in my basement and my wife was screaming " your car is trying to start by itself and i am holding the keys ( I do not have an automatic car starter. I know the water is shorting something out but what. When i stop fast or take off the problems get worse,so I think that the water is moving inside something . if any one has some insight please let me know thanks

Hello, I have the same problems with my 1999 Expedition. The problem seems to be water leaking into the fuse box which then fills up with water and shorts out. This also eventually destroys the Gem module too, so both need to be replaced.
I have searched and there are some different resolves for the leak, but so far no difinitive answer as to where the water is really coming from to be able to stop the leaking. I am taking mine now to try and find the leak source. Replaced the fuse box and Gem module already ($600). Problems usually start after a hard rain. When dry no problems, but problems continue until water drains or drys up in fuse box. Some suggestions I have found: Temporary solution: Drill a hole in bottom of fuse box so water drains (does not solve leak though). If you have a sunroof make sure drainage path is not clogged (might be possible source of leak, I will check this on mine ASAP). I'll let you know what I find out. |

This is a fun one....
You can chase your tail on this one. Fuse boxes are meant to be Moisture proof! So I wouldn't recommend drilling a hole maybe not just yet. If fuses are being blown then for sure a short to ground has occured. Tripple Check ! you Battery state of Charge and The Charging of the Alternator. You should never get more the 14.5 volts back to your Battery. If you do the the built in voltage regulator is not regulating and amperage is being introduced to your systems. If you ever locked your self out and had a tow co. come out to open your door they sometimes puncture the weather stripping along your door frame. Water can then run down to your floorboards where you have wiring harneses all along the rail. Pull off the plastic floorboards (where the carpet meets the door frame ) And you'll see that it is the perfect place for water to stay and out of sight! If so try to suck out the water and let dry. You might get lucky and it will start up fine. Goodluck. |

I had this same problem except for less symtoms. We were able to let the fuse box and Gem dry and are working fine. To fix the leak I used my full glass and have been fine since. Hope this helps.
