Hi all. I am new to this site.

I have a '92 Tempo with 6 cylinder engine (120k miles).

The car runs and drives just fine *except* it has an intermittant problem where it will refuse to shift. Usually it will shift into second gear but not into third so that I can't drive more than about 30 mph. One time it would not even move at all. The problem always disappears if I let the car sit and then it will drive fine. This happens maybe once every two or three weeks.

This almost HAS to be an electrical problem sine the fluid is fine and it shifts fine most of the time. In browsing through this forum I see that others have a similar issue. Does any one know what sensors could cause this to happen? Or, better yet, have any of the forum members who experienced this resolved it?

I have taken it to two mechanics and with both it worked fine when they drove it (of course). The second one (tranny shop) charged $55 for the checkup and when they couldn't duplicate the problem they dropped the pan, said it had "metal shavings" and told me I needed a new tranny for $1100.

No way, it has to be some sensor or electrical problem. Otherwise it would be less intermittant and would not shift properly most of the time.

Any help would be appreciated.
