I have a '92 Tempo with 6 cylinder engine (120k miles).

The car runs and drives just fine *except* it has an intermittant problem where it will refuse to shift. Usually it will shift into second gear but not into third so that I can't drive more than about 30 mph. One time it would not even move at all. The problem always disappears if I let the car sit and then it will drive fine. This happens maybe once every two or three weeks.

I have a 1990 Tempo that I recently bought used. I had it fixed up enough to pass the clean driving requirements in Ontario, fixed up a leak in the ATF a little later.

I'm pretty much a total novice when it comes to cars.

The performance has gotten worse since I bought it. It has problems getting up to speed while heading up a hill or even just after a red light on flat land.

Now everytime it gets hot outside, or I run the engine for an extended period( about 45 minutes) the car loses almost all power and sputters then dies. That is only in the lower gears though. If I can manage to get it to about 60 MPH it does not die.
